History of Vitamin C and Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease By Paul Demetries |

Vitamin C is often used to treat the common cold, but there is recent evidence suggesting that this antioxidant vitamin may also be beneficial for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease. The history of vitamin C use for medicinal purposes was initiated in the mid 1500s, the sailors when they realized they made a tincture of tea tree bark helped combat the unpleasant effects of scurvy, a disease degenerative disease that results from the lack of fruits and vegetables (in other words, a deficiency of Vitamin C). This disease is common in sailors on long voyages at sea.
In animal models, vitamin C has been shown to reduce the effects of lead-induced nerve damage. Similarly, experiments with high doses of the vitamin in adult smokers has been shown to reduce levels of lead in blood by an average of 81% at doses of 1000mg per day. Based on the fact that lead is known to cause neurological deterioration, the researchers suggest that vitamin C "neuroprotective effects can extend to the prevention of other neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
The improved immune function attributed to vitamin C, demonstrates the ability of this antioxidant to combat other diseases associated with old age. Recently, an experimental form of vitamin C with the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier has been shown to reduce age-related neurological deficits. For this reason, scientists say that vitamin C may have the ability to treat many of the problems associated with Alzheimer's disease.
The prevention of Alzheimer's disease and the use of vitamin C and other antioxidants for the treatment of these conditions is still in the early stages. Only time will tell if these safe and economically viable treatment options will be effective antioxidant.
