Alzheimer's disease is the major form of dementia. Was first identified in 1906 by Dr. Alois Alzheimer. Found abnormalities in the brain of a woman who has demonstrated a significant decrease in brain function before death. When his brain was studied, he found what are now called amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles.
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive disease that eventually leads to death. He is currently the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Alzheimer's begins destroying brain cells that leads to memory problems and behavioral changes that affect all aspects of life. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease.
There are many warning signs of Alzheimer's disease. One of the first symptoms of Alzheimer's disease is memory loss. Start by affecting parts of the brain that control memory. A person may also experience problems with completing tasks on a regular basis. For example, they can cook dinner, but forget to eat. You can lose points or put in strange places. A person may also experience changes in mood (rapid mood swings) or personality (being confused or afraid). Another warning sign is experiencing problems with language, forgetting words as used on a regular basis or using words in odd ways. A person may also experience periods of trial or bad they may have moments of disorientation when they do not know where they are or what time it is.
If you or someone you love is experiencing any of the above symptoms, it's worth a visit to your primary care physician. You may be experiencing depression and other conditions that cause similar symptoms of Alzheimer's disease or you could show the first signs of dementia illness. Either way, it's good to know what you're working with so that it can be treated accordingly. Some things like depression can be treated, while Alzheimer's disease will progress. Medical science is advancing and some drugs that have demonstrated effectiveness in slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Work with your doctor to determine what is right for you.
